First Congregational Church was founded in 1960 and soon thereafter joined the United Church of Christ.  The Church was founded by fifty-one Christians who wanted to maintain their faith in Jesus Christ in the Congregational Way.  The Church first met in living rooms and VFW halls before finally purchasing the former Donald H. Shorey Funeral Home and offices on Park Street.  After a spirited remodeling effort, our church services were first held in our present sanctuary in the Fall of 1961.

Our church has traditionally been a training church for students at the Bangor Theological Seminary.  In our forty-year history, we have had six ordinations here, and have seen many pastors go on to serve Christ in many capacities.  Presently the Pastor serving our church is Reverend Alice Lester.  Over the years, we have increased the size of our church buildings and have increased the size of our church membership.  We are a medium-sized, still growing, church dedicated to the work of Jesus Christ as guided by the Holy Spirit. Our friendliness is shown not only in our warm church services but also in our coffee fellowships and suppers that we offer throughout the year.  Our church was nicknamed "The Church that Love Built" by its founders, and we treasure and maintain that tradition to this day.

We recognize spirituality and community as necessary to the creation of whole people, and work for more justice and more love in our own lives and in the world. For UUs, there is no separation between activism and spirituality; we therefore actively pursue these values and vision.

Organized in 1867, the First Universalist Church of Pittsfield is one of Pittsfield’s oldest continuously worshiping faith communities.  It is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.  The church sanctuary is adorned with religious murals created by Maine ecclesiastical artist, Harry Cochrane, and stained glass windows created by Louis Comfort Tiffany.  In addition to the breath-taking sanctuary, the building has an auditorium with a stage, a community room with full adjoining kitchen, and the Ladies Aid Parlor.  The church building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is handicapped accessible, and is a popular site for a variety of spiritual celebrations, weddings, small theatrical productions, and community events.

The First Universalist Church of Pittsfield has been the progressive liberal religious voice in the community for more than one hundred years.  We seek a deeper spirituality, share a commitment to affirming the inherent worth and dignity of all persons, and promote respect for the interconnected web of all existence.  All are welcome to join the congregation on Sundays at 9:45 a.m. for worship and celebration of life.  Our Sunday services represent a wide range of religious, ethical, and spiritual traditions. Children’s Religious Exploration classes that concentrate on ethical and spiritual development are also held at 9:45 a.m.   Strength through cultural and spiritual diversity characterizes the beloved community that is The First Universalist Church of Pittsfield.

First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church is the oldest church in the area, having been organized in 1823.  It was incorporated according to Baptist polity in 1855.  Following a fire that destroyed the original building, the current structure was built in 1892.  First Baptist and the Baptist Foreign Missionary Society collaborated in the founding of Maine Central Institute in the 1860's.

The current congregation is comprised of people of all ages.  There are roughly 200-250 people in attendance for Sunday morning services. Numerous in-home studies and fellowship groups meet at different times during the week.  The Church is evangelical in demeanor, and Reformed in its emphasis.  There is a regular Sunday School program during the school year.  Services are of varying styles, incorporating both ancient and contemporary music.  Although the Church's identify is historically Baptist, members come from all different faith backgrounds.

Pittsfield First Baptist Church is a caring community made up of many diverse people from many different backgrounds, all bound together with our desire to encourage, and uplift each other, and our communities and spread the good news!
